With Christmas just around the corner, you may be thinking of getting the Christmas tree out of storage and proudly displaying it in your chosen space.
As a professional interior design company, we take presentation very seriously. So we have come up with a few tips on how you can enjoy an elegantly decorated Christmas tree this Christmas.
1. Pick a colour scheme
The first step to an elegant Christmas tree is to pick a colour scheme. Sticking to one colour scheme will make your tree look cohesive and complete.
Be careful to choose a scheme that compliments the colour scheme of the room, and ensure that the Christmas tree ornaments don’t clash too.
For a traditional look, go for red and green colors. For something modern, go for metallic colors like gold or silver.
2. Hang the lights
Christmas tree lights typically come on green or white wire strands, so be careful to choose the strand colour that matches your tree. Illuminating your Christmas tree from the inside out will give it the most dynamic look so push some of the lights further into the tree. Start at the base of the trunk and work your way up, wrapping lights around every major branch, moving from the trunk to the tip and back.
Make sure that you have enough lights so the tree doesn’t look sparsely illuminated. As a guide, you should use a strand of 100 lights for every 30 cm of vertical space.
3. Add Christmas tree garlands and ribbons
This is where things can get a bit tricky.
Start at the top and slowly work your way down, increasing the space between each wave as you move towards the bottom.
Plan to use about two strands of garland for every 30cm of vertical space.
To avoid a busy look, use a variety of garlands from plain to fancy. Thin, beaded garlands look best hung from branch to branch; thicker paper, ribbon, or foil garlands look best wrapped loosely around the entire tree.
4. Add a topper
Make it a good one as people tend to notice the top decoration first.
To avoid any unnecessary hassle or damage to the decoration of the tree, it might be a good idea to add this first.
When choosing a topper, keep your chosen theme in mind.
Traditionally, people tend to go for:
An artificial bird
A pretty bow
Imitation holly leaves and berries
A large snowflake
But of course, the choice is yours.
5. Hang the ornaments
And finally, some tasteful ornaments are the last step to a beautiful and elegant Christmas tree.
Start with your favorite ornaments by placing them in prominent positions on the tree then move on to the larger ornaments.
Fill in around those ornaments with medium- and small-size ornaments. Be sure to hang some ornaments closer to the trunk to create depth and interest. Finish dressing the tree by adding specialty items, such as clip-on ornaments or icicles.
