At LOFT, our interior designers have had the pleasure of working with many clients both at home and abroad.
We have had valuable insight into the world of do it yourself interior design where quite often, small yet important things tend to get overlooked.
Below, we share the most popular DIY interior design mistakes you should avoid.
Poorly positioned art
It’s all about positioning. Try to avoid hanging that fantastic piece of artwork too high up. In general, artwork should be positioned at around eye-level.
Teeny, tiny rugs
As a general rule, make sure that your rugs extend to each piece of furniture in a seating arrangement. Tiny rugs really do look out of place.
Too many open shelves
While a good old open shelf gives you the opportunity to be creative with your ornaments and chintz, they can also look messy. When thinking about storage, make sure to have a good proportion of closed cupboards rather than too many open shelves.
Personality-free living spaces
Even if you’re a perfectionist, a stale, “perfect looking” room can end up looking like a hotel lobby without character.
Be sure to add some warmth to the room with accessories, fabrics or a nice throw blanket.
Too much clutter
While a stale, perfect space isn’t recommended, a chaotic, cluttered space isn’t ideal either. Be sure to get the balance right between practicality and looks.
Again, the perfectionists among you will struggle with this one, but it isn’t vital to match absolutely everything in a room. Take your time to choose furniture that compliments each other, they don’t have to be exactly the same.
