Back in the Day
In 1875, John Perry, son of a Cambridgeshire merchant, founded Cole & Son. Back then, the company was situated in Islington, north London, which was an area famous for the 190 hand block printing companies that were working there in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Cole & Son printed for all the big and well-known companies throughout the 19th century, and was renowned for supplying gorgeous stripes and jaspes, above the high quality block printing.
In its early days, the company built machines that helped to re-introduce pan coating, as well as to revive Flocking; a process that was invented in Holland in 1680. The company was bought in 1941 by A P Cole, proprietor of Cole & Son Ltd, with offices and showrooms in Central London.
